Previously, foreign workers had the inconvenience of needing to newly enroll in workers' compensation insurance when extending their employment period through rehiring after the 3-year coverage period from the date of entry expired. However, with the recent introduction of the 'workers' compensation insurance automatic renewal system,' these procedures have been greatly simplified.
Key Changes: 'Automatic Extension' Even After 3 Years
In the past, when the employment activity period (3 years) ended and rehiring occurred, the insurance coverage expired, making new enrollment essential. However, for cases where work began and insurance enrollment occurred after December 16, 2024, the insurance is automatically renewed without the need for separate re-enrollment procedures.
Essential Conditions for Automatic Renewal
Not all enrollees automatically receive the benefits. To maintain the automatic renewal benefits, the following conditions must be met.
Consent Form Completion: At the time of initial insurance enrollment, a 'automatic renewal consent form' must be completed.
Maintaining Account and Ensuring Balance: The initial registered insurance premium payment account must remain active, and sufficient balance must be available to cover the premium at the renewal time.
A representative from the Ministry of Employment and Labor stated, 'With the implementation of this automatic renewal system, we expect to prevent insurance gaps for foreign workers and enhance administrative convenience for both employers and workers.'
If the conditions for automatic renewal are not met or if it is an enrollment prior to December 16, 2024, new enrollment in workers' compensation insurance must be done in the traditional manner before the coverage period expires to avoid disadvantages.
