Explanation of premium calculation methods and key standards for international student health insurance as of 2026
1. Basic Principles of Premium Calculation
Foreign international students are basically classified as regional subscribers, and premiums are determined based on the following standards.
- Average Premium Standard
If there is no income or assets, or if they are below a certain level, the premium is imposed based on the average premium of all subscribers.
- International Student Reduction Benefit
Considering the financial circumstances of international students, a 50% reduction is applied to the premium for general foreign regional subscribers.
- Income and Assets Combined
If income is generated from part-time jobs in Korea or if assets are held in the individual's name (vehicles, real estate, etc.), the premium may increase according to the calculated score.
2. Expected Premium Levels in 2026
Health insurance premiums are updated annually based on the previous year's average premium figures. Approximate amounts reflecting recent trends
- Overall Average Premium / Approximately 150,000 KRW ~ 155,000 KRW
- International Student Final Payment Amount / Approximately 76,000 KRW ~ 78,000 KRW (with 50% reduction applied)
3. Enrollment Timing by Visa Type
The start date of health insurance coverage varies depending on the visa (residency status).
- D-2 (Study), D-4-3 (Elementary/Middle/High School Students) / Enrollment starts immediately from the date of foreigner registration after entry. (Re-entry holders based on re-entry date)
- D-4 other than D-4-3 (Elementary/Middle/High School Students) (General Training/Language Training) / Enrollment starts from the day 6 months have passed since the entry date.
- F-4 (Overseas Koreans) International Students / Can enroll from the school enrollment date (upon submission of enrollment certificate).
4. Payment Methods and Precautions
- Prepayment System / Foreign health insurance premiums must be paid in advance by the 25th of the current month for the next month's premium. (Example: April premium must be paid by March 25)
- Payment Methods / Pay at a bank with the notice sent by mail, or use direct deposit to a dedicated account, automatic transfer, or the corporation app ('The Health Insurance').
- Penalties for Non-Payment / If premiums are not paid, you cannot receive health insurance benefits (coverage) when using hospital services, and must bear the full medical expenses yourself.
Most importantly, when extending a visa or changing residency status, you may face disadvantages (restrictions) at the Ministry of Justice Immigration Office.
5. Exclusions from Premium Reduction
If any of the following conditions apply, the 50% reduction benefit for international students cannot be received, and the same premium as for general individuals will be imposed.- If annual income exceeds 3.6 million KRW
- If property tax assessment standard exceeds 135 million KRW
