Pursuant to the amendment to the Immigration Control Act effective from September 21, 2018, foreigners holding permanent residency (F-5) are now obligated to reissue their permanent residency cards every 10 years.
The detailed information is as follows.
1. Why do you need to reissue it?
In the past, after acquiring permanent residency, the alien registration card had no expiration date, making it difficult to track the holder's death or changes in residence. To address this, the law was amended to set the validity period of the permanent residency card to 10 years and require periodic renewal.
2. Reissue Application Period (Based on Acquisition in 2007)
Those whose 10 years had already passed as of the law enforcement date (September 21, 2018) were required to apply within the following period:
Application Deadline
Within 2 years from the date 10 years have elapsed since the acquisition of permanent residency status
Current Status
If you have not applied, you may be subject to a fine of up to 2 million won, so it is advisable to visit the local immigration office as soon as possible.
3. Application Method and Required Documents
Required Documents
1. Passport 2. Current permanent residency card (alien registration card) 3. Integrated application form (available at immigration office) 4. One standard photo (3.5cm x 4.5cm) 5. Fee (approximately 30,000 won)
Note
Reissuing the permanent residency card does not mean the loss of 'permanent residency status' itself; it is simply a procedure to renew the ID card. If there are no special disqualifying reasons such as criminal records, the process is relatively straightforward.
