What is a refugee status holder?
A refugee status holder is a person who has fled their own country due to a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion, and who receives protection under international law and domestic law.
Why do people become refugees?
Persecution: When suffering serious harm or facing life-threatening danger due to race, religion, political opinion, etc.
War: When forced to leave home due to civil war, international conflicts, etc.
Natural disasters: When life becomes impossible due to earthquakes, floods, or other natural disasters.
How is the refugee recognition procedure conducted?
Refugee application: Upon arrival in Korea, submit a refugee application to the Ministry of Justice.
Interview and fact-finding: The applicant must explain their story in detail to the responsible official during the interview and answer questions.
Review: The Ministry of Justice reviews the refugee application case.
Decision: If recognized as a refugee, a refugee recognition certificate is issued, allowing legal residence in Korea.
