If a worker suffers an injury or illness due to work and is left with a physical impairment after recovery, the employer must provide impairment compensation according to the degree of the impairment. (Labor Standards Act, Article 80) The classification of the degree of this impairment is called the physical impairment grade, which is determined from the most severe to the mildest, ranging from Grade 1 to Grade 14. Which physical impairment grade a specific impairment falls under is detailed specifically in the appendix of the Enforcement Decree of the Labor Standards Act. Additionally, the Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance Act also stipulates that insurance benefits are paid according to the same physical impairment grades (appendix of the Enforcement Decree of the same Act).
