What is Return Travel Expense?

If the working conditions specified at the time of entering into the employment contract differ from the actual conditions, the worker may immediately terminate the employment contract. In such cases, the amount paid by the employer to the worker who changed residence for the purpose of employment is called return travel expense (Labor Standards Act, Article 26). The same Act provides special protection provisions for women and workers under 18 years of age in Article 74. Here, 'return' generally means returning to the residence where the worker was living before employment, but it is not necessarily limited to that. The scope of return travel expense includes the worker's own transportation fare, as well as meal and accommodation expenses en route. If cohabiting family members return together, it is interpreted to include their return travel expenses as well.
