(1) First, report [loss of nationality].
※ Report of loss of nationality and application for restoration of nationality can be submitted simultaneously at the Korean Immigration Office. It is possible.
[Required documents for loss of nationality]
‣ Two copies of the report on loss of nationality (legal form)
‣ Two copies each of your basic certificate and family relationship certificate (issued by a district office in Korea, etc.)
‣ Original Australian citizenship certificate and 2 copies
- If the name on the Australian citizenship and family relationship register is different, the original and 2 copies of the name change certificate
‣ The original and 1 copy of the final Korean passport
(2) Next, apply for [Residence of Foreign Nationals]
(3) Apply for [Permission for Reinstatement of Nationality].
- This is an application to restore lost nationality and is processed at the immigration office with jurisdiction over the place of stay.
- Permit for Nationality Recovery The application cannot be made through an agent, and you must apply in person by providing the application form and other documents.
(4) Receive a [Permission for Restoration of Nationality].
- You will receive a notice of permission for restoration of nationality from the Minister of Justice to your address within 10 days from the date of permission. (Permission will be sent via text message to your registered mobile phone)
※ Nationality recovery permission takes 2 to 3 months on average from the application date.
- When you receive a nationality recovery permission notice, visit the nearest city/county/district office to obtain a basic certificate and check whether the contents of the nationality recovery permission have been filled out and any errors. Confirm
(5) I take the [Pledge not to exercise foreign nationality].
- You must visit the immigration office where you applied for nationality restoration permission and fill out and submit the “Pledge not to exercise foreign nationality”.
※ Documents required when taking a pledge not to exercise foreign nationality: Basic certificate, notice of permission, certificate of residence of foreign nationality, 1 photo (3×4cm)
- After taking a pledge not to exercise foreign nationality, it includes information such as using a Korean passport when leaving Korea or entering a foreign country.
(6) [Register registration].
- Fill out and submit the “Pledge not to exercise foreign nationality” to the immigration office. Once accepted, you will receive a “Confirmation of pledge not to exercise foreign nationality”.
- Bring the “Confirmation of pledge not to exercise foreign nationality”, a basic certificate, and 2 photos (3×4cm). Visit the town/myeon/dong community center where you live, report resident registration, and then receive a resident registration card.
※ After reporting resident registration, apply for issuance of a Korean passport
(7) Return the [Foreign nationality residence report certificate].
- After completing resident registration, return the foreign nationality residence report certificate to the immigration office within 30 days. (A fine will be charged after 30 days)
- If you wish, you can return the certificate of residence of foreign nationality in advance when you receive the confirmation of pledge not to exercise foreign nationality.

○ Application form
- Application for nationality recovery, nationality recovery statement, identity statement (2 copies), family relationship notification
○ Attached documents
- Copy of passport, copy of certificate of residence of foreign nationality
- Documents related to acquisition of foreign nationality (submit copies of originals such as citizenship certificate)
- Basic certificate that is “closed”, with “loss of nationality” marked Copy of military registration
- Proof of name change
○ Application fee: KRW 50,000
□ Notes
○ Application for nationality recovery permit cannot be processed on your behalf.
- Nationality recovery is a very important application for change of personal status, so proxy processing is not permitted. No.
○ Applications for nationality recovery permit must be made individually.
- Couples must apply individually and cannot apply jointly with the husband or wife.
○ The pledge not to exercise foreign nationality to acquire dual nationality is only possible if you have applied for nationality recovery permission while having an address (residence) in Korea.
※ In other words, it is not accepted at the consulate general.
○ The pledge not to exercise foreign nationality must be made within one year from the date of nationality recovery permit.
- You must also make a pledge not to exercise foreign nationality by visiting the local immigration office.
