Previously, foreign workers faced inconvenience when their 3-year coverage period expired from the date of entry, requiring them to newly enroll in injury insurance upon re-employment to extend their work period. However, the recent introduction of the 'injury insurance automatic renewal system' has simplified this process considerably.
Core change: 'Automatic extension' even after 3 years
Previously, when re-employed after the employment activity period (3 years) ended, insurance coverage expired and new enrollment was mandatory. However, starting from cases where work began on or after December 16, 2024, insurance will automatically renew without any separate re-enrollment process.
Necessary conditions for automatic renewal
Not all enrollees unconditionally receive this benefit. To maintain the automatic renewal benefit, the following conditions must be met.
Consent form completion: During initial insurance enrollment, the 'automatic renewal consent form' must be written.
Account maintenance and balance sufficiency: The insurance premium payment account initially registered must be activated, and there must be sufficient balance available to pay premiums at the renewal point.
A Ministry of Employment and Labor official stated, "The implementation of this automatic renewal system is expected to prevent gaps in insurance coverage for foreign workers and raise administrative convenience for both employers and workers."
If you fall under conditions that do not qualify for automatic renewal or if your enrollment occurred before December 16, 2024, you must newly enroll in injury insurance using the previous method before the coverage period expires to avoid disadvantages.
