1. Basic Qualifications for Naturalization Application
To acquire Korean nationality, you must basically possess the following qualifications.
• Adult Requirement: Must be an adult (19 years old or older) according to the Korean Civil Act.
• Conduct Requirement: Must have upright conduct required as a member of the Korean community and a willingness to comply with legal order.
• Ability to Maintain Livelihood: Must have the ability to lead a stable life based on one's own or cohabiting family's assets and skills.
• Basic Qualifications: Must possess basic knowledge required as a citizen, including Korean language ability as well as deep understanding of Korean customs and culture.
• National Security Assurance: Must be recognized that granting naturalization does not harm Korea's national security, maintenance of order, and public welfare.
2. Additional Requirements Based on Marital Relationship
If the spouse is a Korean national, one of the following requirements must be met depending on the residence period.
1. Residence in Korea for 2 years or more: In the case of continuously residing in Korea with address for 2 years or more while married to a Korean spouse
2. 3 years after marriage and 1 year residence: In the case where 3 years have passed since marriage to a Korean spouse, and continuously residing in Korea with address for 1 year or more among them
※ Notes on calculating domestic residence periodIt is based on the period of legal stay after completing foreigner registration. However, in the following cases, even if departed, it is recognized as continuous stay in Korea and the periods before and after are combined. (Actual overseas stay period is excluded)
• In the case of departing after obtaining re-entry permit before expiration of stay period and re-entering within that period
• In the case of temporary departure due to unavoidable reasons where extension of stay is impossible and re-entering within 1 month with visa

Naturalization applications can be submitted by visiting the Nationality Division of the Immigration and Foreigner Office in charge of your residence area.

① Basic Application Documents
• Naturalization Permission Application Form: Attach 1 color photo (3.5cm × 4.5cm)
• Proof of Identity: Passport copy and home country ID copy (For Chinese nationals, include alien registration card and household registry)
• Criminal Record Certificate: Issued by home country government
• Fee: 300,000 won
② Documents Related to Korean Spouse
• Spouse's family relationship certificate, basic certificate, marriage relationship certificate, resident registration abstract
• If there are children: Family relationship certificate in child's name
③ Documents Proving Ability to Maintain Livelihood (Applicant or Cohabiting Family)
• Real estate registry copy with public assessment price of 30 million won or more or lease contract with lease deposit of 30 million won or more
• Employment certificate, salary details, etc., documents that can confirm income
④ Other Country-Specific Required Documents
• Family Relationship Verification: For China, kinship relationship notarial certificate certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; for other countries, family register or birth certificate, etc.
• Administrative Procedures: 'Family Relationship Notification Form' to be notified to the Supreme Court upon naturalization permission (handwritten)
