While the number of new HIV infections in Korea is generally on a downward trend, the number of infections among foreigners is increasing, requiring special attention from foreign residents.
According to the 2024 HIV/AIDS report released by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, there were 975 new HIV infections reported last year, a slight decrease from the previous year. However, the number of infections among foreigners was 261 (26.8%), an increase from the previous year (256).
■ Particularly high proportion of infections among foreign women
The gender distribution is noteworthy. While most new infections are male (88.7%), 79 out of 110 female infections (71.8%) were confirmed to be foreigners. This suggests that women within foreign communities may be more vulnerable to HIV risk.
■ 99% of infection routes are "sexual contact"... Prevention is key
Epidemiological surveys show that 99.8% of infections are through sexual contact. Experts emphasize that safe practices like condom use are vital regardless of nationality.
■ "Get tested even if no symptoms"... Anonymous testing guaranteed
HIV often has no early symptoms, making detection difficult. Early discovery and treatment can prevent transmission and allow for a healthy life. Support centers encourage foreigners to use free, anonymous testing services at public health centers nationwide without fear of exposure.
